Product description

Cotinus Royal Purple grows well in pots and containers and is the perfect small tree for brightening up patios, driveways and terraces, as well as flanking entrances.

Also known as the smoke tree or smoke bush, cotinus royal purple is often grown as a large shrub. However, trained into a patio tree shape, it makes an excellent addition to any garden design. Patio trees provide height and structure to an outdoor space. The vivid foliage provides plenty of colour interest, especially in the summer and autumn months.

This deciduous patio tree boasts long-lasting ovate foliage from spring to autumn. In spring, terminal panicles of tiny pink flowers appear, creating a hazy effect - hence the common name smoke tree

Cotinus royal purple is a hardy tree that tolerates whatever the British weather throws at it. It thrives in moist, well-draining soil and is happy in most soil types. Cotinus becomes drought tolerant as it matures. However, like all plants, pot-grown specimens do need to be watered more frequently. This patio tree tolerates partial shade but the vibrant colour, translucent foliage and smoky effect are best shown off in full sun.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Cotinus in late winter or early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Remove any damaged, crossing, or weak branches to maintain a strong structure. For fuller, bushier growth, cut back the stems hard every few years in early spring before new growth appears. A slow-release fertiliser applied in spring can further enhance its stunning leaf colour and blooms.

How to Water

Water Cotinus regularly during its first year to establish a strong root system, particularly in dry spells. Once established, these trees are relatively drought-tolerant and require minimal watering, but ensure the soil remains slightly moist during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as Cotinus prefers well-drained soil and can be susceptible to root rot. Water early in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation.

How to Plant

To plant Cotinus, choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining, neutral to slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Place the tree into the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil, firm gently around the roots, and water thoroughly. Add a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the trunk.
