Product description

The Cotoneaster Tree is a lovely arching plant that makes an attractive addition to any garden. It has semi-evergreen leaves that are long, pointed, neatly veined and glazed with a mid to dark green colour. Semi-evergreen means that the leaves will fall only in the harshest of winters, so you can expect the tree to retain most of its green leaves throughout the year.

The key attraction of the Cotoneaster Tree is the beautiful bright red berries that adorn the branches in autumn. The berries remain on the plant for an extended time, creating a long lasting and eye-catching display. In June and July, the tree bears masses of white fluffy corymbs of flowers that are extremely attractive to butterflies and bees due to their strong, floral scent. Birds are also attracted as they enjoy eating the berries.

This small ornamental tree is fully hardy and will thrive in full sun or partial shade. It prefers well drained, moderately fertile soil. The tree does require heavy or regular pruning but can be pruned to remove wayward branches or reduce the size of the plant if needed.

This lovely, arching tree offers all year round interest. It looks fabulous arching over a path, where you can walk underneath it. It is also perfect to arch over a patio, a courtyard or a gazebo to provide summer shade. The Cotoneaster can be used very effectively in small gardens for screening purposes. This lovely tree holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Cotoneaster annually in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage healthy growth. Remove any damaged, diseased, or overcrowded branches to improve airflow and light penetration. To enhance its decorative berries and flowers, a balanced fertiliser applied in early spring can provide a nutrient boost. Cotoneaster also makes an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, as its berries attract birds throughout the winter months.

How to Water

Water Cotoneaster regularly during its first year, particularly during dry periods, to help it establish a strong root system. Once established, these trees are drought-tolerant and only require occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as Cotoneaster prefers well-drained soil and can suffer in waterlogged conditions. For best results, water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and maximise absorption.

How to Plant

To plant Cotoneaster, choose a sunny or partially shaded location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and of equal depth. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, then backfill the hole with a mix of soil and organic matter. Firm the soil gently around the roots and water thoroughly to help the plant settle. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, leaving some space around the trunk to prevent rot.
