Top Tip
Prune Plum trees in early spring to maintain an open structure and remove any damaged or crossing branches. Avoid pruning in winter as this increases the risk of silver leaf disease. During fruiting, thin the developing plums to prevent overloading the branches and improve fruit size and quality. Regular care will help your tree thrive and deliver abundant, healthy harvests.
How to Water
Water Plum trees deeply after planting and regularly during the first year to establish strong roots. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells. Once established, Plum trees require less frequent watering, but additional water is beneficial during prolonged dry periods or when the tree is fruiting. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and ensure effective hydration.
How to Plant
To plant a Plum tree, choose a sunny, sheltered location with well-draining, fertile soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower than its depth. Position the tree so that the graft union is just above soil level, then backfill with soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly to settle the roots, and apply a mulch layer around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk to prevent rot. Staking the tree may be necessary in windy areas for added support.
