Product description

Exochorda serratifolia ‘Snow White’ is a compact, deciduous tree sometimes referred to as Pearl Tree or Pearl bush. The name is a reference to the buds of pure white that appear all along the arching branches in the early spring like so many masses of pearls, which then bloom into large white flowers drooping slightly beneath the branches. The flowers are resilient, coping well with the lingering frosts that can sometimes carry on through to Spring.

Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Keep in full or partial sun. Low maintenance and easy to care for. Avoid waterlogged soils. A great option for small gardens where space is limited.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Exochorda after flowering to encourage fresh growth and maintain its elegant shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches, and lightly trim back flowering stems to maintain a compact structure. Avoid heavy pruning as this can reduce next year’s blooms. With proper care, this plant will reward you with its beautiful cascading white flowers, making it a standout feature in any garden.

How to Water

Water Exochorda thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and establish strong roots. In the first year, water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering, although prolonged dry periods may still necessitate additional hydration. Early morning or evening watering is ideal to minimise evaporation and allow the plant to absorb moisture effectively.

How to Plant

To plant Exochorda, select a sunny spot with fertile, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball, and ensure the soil is loosened at the bottom. Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil, firming it gently as you go, and water thoroughly. Add a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring it does not touch the plant stem. Space plants around 1.5–2 metres apart for optimal growth and display.
