Product description

Gleditsia triacanthos Sunburst brings a burst of yellow into your garden. If you have an abundance of red, pink and white, adding a touch of gold will complete the colour palette of your garden.

The Honey locust Tree has an elegant spreading habit and grows to display a beautiful rounded crown. The main feature is its foliage - in spring the pinnate leaves are a lovely golden yellow, turning to a lime yellow-green in summer. As autumn approaches, they once again take on a yellow hue, this time with a translucent clear look.

Plant your Honey Locust tree in full sun or partial shade. It is fairly tolerant and will be able to withstand some exposure. Pollution is not a problem, making it ideal for city gardens. It can grow in most soil types that are free draining. The tree will reach heights of around 7m and a spread of around 5m in a 20 year period.

Unlike many similar Honey Locust trees, this variety does not have thorns, making it a great choice for gardens with children. Plant as an ornamental tree in the centre of your garden or next to your entrance gate. It is also the perfect choice to add a bright burst of colour and new life to a dull or forgotten corner.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Gleditsia trees in late winter or early spring to remove any damaged, dead, or crossing branches, maintaining their attractive form. These trees thrive with minimal intervention, but regular checks help encourage healthy growth. Their graceful, feathery foliage provides dappled shade, making them an excellent choice for gardens and open spaces where light, airy coverage is desired.

How to Water

Water Gleditsia trees deeply after planting and regularly during their first year to promote root establishment, particularly during dry spells. Once established, these trees are drought-tolerant and require minimal watering. However, occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods can support their health and growth. Avoid waterlogging by allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings, as excessive moisture can harm the roots.

How to Plant

To plant a Gleditsia, choose a sunny location with well-draining soil, preferably neutral to slightly acidic. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just deep enough for the root collar to sit level with the ground. Loosen the soil around the planting area to encourage root development, then backfill gently, firming the soil as you go. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil, and apply a mulch layer around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, leaving a small gap around the trunk.
