Instructions
Top Tip
Prune Laburnum x watereri in late summer after flowering to remove any dead or damaged branches and maintain its graceful shape. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce flowering the following season. Regularly clear any suckers that may develop at the base to keep the tree neat and healthy. For safety, ensure the tree is planted away from areas where children or pets might ingest the highly toxic seeds or foliage.
How to Water
Water Laburnum x watereri regularly during its first growing season to help establish a deep and healthy root system. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Once established, these trees are relatively drought-tolerant, requiring watering only during prolonged dry spells. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and ensure the water penetrates deeply into the soil. During hot summers, supplement watering to support healthy flowering and foliage.
How to Plant
To plant Laburnum x watereri, choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with well-draining soil, ideally neutral to slightly alkaline. Dig a hole twice as wide and slightly shallower than the root ball, loosening the soil at the base to encourage root growth. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the graft point (if present) is above the soil level. Backfill with soil, firming gently around the roots, and water thoroughly. Add a layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch clear of the trunk to prevent rot. Protect young trees from strong winds to support early establishment.
