Product description

Solanum Rantonnetii is a gorgeous patio tree that provides a lovely fragrance through its flowers. The main attraction of the tree is the burst of purple colour throughout the petals, creating an eye-catching, standout feature through the growing season of June - September. The small, yellow bud that forms in the centre provides the perfect contrast between the light and dark shades that this tree possesses. Caring for it well will make it an effective addition to any border, patio or plant display, meaning you should position it in full sunlight to get the best out of it. Regularly watering it to ensure the soil stays moist throughout the year is recommended as it will maintain the flowers, the dark green foliage and effective, lollipop stem that holds it all in place.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Solanum in early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and encourage fresh, vigorous growth. For climbing varieties, tie new shoots to supports as they grow and trim back overgrown stems to maintain a neat shape. Regular pruning will also help to promote more flowers and keep the plant manageable. Solanum thrives when given the right support and care, making it a stunning addition to any outdoor garden.

How to Water

Water Solanum thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season to help the roots establish. Once established, water regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Check the top layer of soil; if it feels dry to the touch, it’s time to water. Water at the base of the plant early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and encourage deeper root growth.

How to Plant

To plant Solanum, choose a sunny, sheltered location with well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than its depth to position the plant at the same level it was in its container. Firm the soil gently around the roots, water thoroughly, and add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. If planting against a wall or trellis for climbing varieties, ensure they have proper support. Space plants at least 50–70 cm apart for good airflow and growth.
