Product description

The captivating bell shaped flowers of this charming fritillary are instantly recognizable by their distinctive snakes-skin markings. A sprinkling of snakes head fritillaries are a sight to behold when naturalised in damp woodlands or informal areas of grass. These charming wildflowers are protected in the wild and rarely seen in their native meadow habitats. They are guaranteed to attract attention in your garden with their elegant springtime display.

Fritillaria meleagris thrives in the reliably moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting to improve less than ideal soils. Plant snakes head fritillary bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4") and 10cm (4") apart. Fritillary bulbs are fragile so always handle them with care. Planting them on their sides will help to avoid water collecting in their hollow crowns and prevent the bulbs from rotting. For natural looking drifts of fritillary flowers, gently cast the bulbs across the planting area and plant them where they land!

Instructions

Top Tip

Cover the area with a layer of horticultural grit or broken eggshells to stop snails and slugs devouring new shoots as they emerge.

How to Water

Water thoroughly when planting. After this, fritillarias planted in the ground should only need to be watered during dry spells. Bulbs grown in pots and containers will need watering more regularly to prevent the soil from drying out.

How to Plant

Plant fritillaria bulbs in mid to late autumn in full sun or partial shade with moist but well-draining soil. Use a bulb planter or trowel to dig holes around 10cm apart and place one bulb around 30cm deep in each hole. Ensure the pointed end faces upwards then backfill the hole with soil, firm down, and water in well.
